Contest Entry 22 - Tim Bradley

1931 VariTyper

The concept of the interchangeable vertical cylinder was introduced by James Hammond in 1891. Mechanical and cosmetic improvements by his company ensued, including key tops that could be swapped out for 300 available typefaces and languages, mathematical symbols, card catalog and ledger formats, etc. The impetus for interchangeable type was the need to produce documents in Arabic and Hebrew.
